Chrism Mass unites the diocese in a spirit of hope and service
04/15/2025
The Chrism Mass marks the annual blessing of the sacred oils—Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens and Sacred Chrism—that will be used in sacraments and rites throughout the year across all parishes. But beyond the ritual, the Mass also serves as a visible sign of communion between the bishop and his priests, who solemnly renewed their priestly promises during the liturgy.
Adding to its spiritual depth, this year’s Chrism Mass carried special significance as it took place during the Holy Year—a time set aside by the Catholic Church for spiritual renewal, pilgrimage and reconciliation. As the Diocese of Erie continues its observance of this sacred year, the celebration became a powerful moment of purpose. It invited the faithful to recommit themselves to the mission of the church: to carry Christ’s light into the world, to walk together in faith and to build a future rooted in hope.
In his homily, Bishop Persico reflected on the purpose of the day, noting that the Chrism Mass unifies the bishop and the priests. He affirmed the unique role of priestly ministry in service to God and offered words of gratitude to the clergy for leading through challenging times. He acknowledged that for many years, the faithful have gathered for this Mass with heavy hearts—amid grand jury reports, the global pandemic, pastoral planning and a world that has increasingly set aside the values upon which we have staked our lives.
Bishop Persico also expressed his gratitude for the presence and faith of consecrated religious, laity, deacons and their wives. He reminded all gathered that the sacred oils blessed on this day are a sign of God’s mercy poured forth in our lives, strengthening us to evangelize and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.
He emphasized that he cannot lead without the support of others and thanked priests for continuing to lead during times that have demanded a great deal. These are times marked by diminishing participation in parish life—due to age, changing demographics and values that no longer always resonate with the Gospel we preach.
“We cannot walk this journey alone,” he said. “Now more than ever, we need each other.”
As coworkers for the sake of the Kingdom, the Chrism Mass served as a reminder that the mission of the church is shared by all—the clergy, religious and laity alike.
Bishop Persico concluded his homily with this sentiment:
“And so to all my sisters and brothers who make up this local Church, thank you for living your baptism, for embracing the values of the Gospel, and for doing your part in building God’s Kingdom,” said Bishop Persico.
“And to my brother priests, thank you for the witness of your lives and for your priestly service, given so generously, at great personal sacrifice and often with little recognition. Know of my love and deep respect for you, brothers, as colleagues in ministry and men of faith --- a love and respect that grows in my heart with the passing of each year in which I am privileged to serve as your Bishop.”
May God continue to sustain us all in the ministry to which we have been called by Jesus, the true and only source of our hope and peace.
Together, the faithful are called to walk in hope, support one another and continue the work of sharing the Gospel in a turbulent world. Visit our photo album to view additional photos from the event.
