On Wednesday, January 15, Gannon University celebrated a momentous occasion with the blessing and dedication of the newly renovated Highmark Events Center at 620 Peach Street. The ceremony, which included a ribbon-cutting by university partners, Board of Trustees and current student-athletes, marked a significant milestone in Gannon’s ongoing mission to integrate faith, education and community engagement.

Father Michael Kesicki, University Chaplain, offered a blessing for the center, accompanied by student-athletes who joined in prayer. In his remarks, Father Kesicki emphasized that the Highmark Events Center would serve as a place for activities that "renew the spirit, strengthen the mind, foster healthy competition and promote fruitful sportsmanship." His words resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the university's commitment to Catholic values and its role as a cornerstone of spiritual and intellectual growth.

Dr. Walter Iwanenko, Gannon University President, and Lisa Goddard McGuirk, director of athletics, expressed gratitude for the community's support and excitement for the center's future. Dr. Iwanenko remarked, “The Highmark Events Center is a symbol of Gannon’s dedication to fostering community, supporting students and inspiring excellence.”

The Highmark Events Center, previously known as "The Audi" and later the Hammermill Center, underwent an impressive $12 million renovation over the past year. Enhancements include modern heating and cooling systems, advanced lighting and sound technology, upgraded locker rooms and a prominent video screen visible from Perry Square. These upgrades ensure the center remains a premier venue for Gannon’s nearly 700 student-athletes while continuing to serve as a hub for the Erie community.

Beyond athletics, the center has long been a gathering place for the Erie region, hosting lectures, concerts, camps and community programs. With its modernized facilities, the Highmark Events Center is poised to welcome even more events, supporting downtown businesses and contributing to the local economy.

The renovation was a signature project of Gannon’s Believe. Inspire. Transform: Gannon’s Next Century campaign, which seeks to raise $100 million to advance the university's mission. Reflecting on the project’s completion, Dr. Iwanenko shared, “This is a space where generations will come together to celebrate, compete and create lasting memories.”

The diocese is proud to see Gannon University continue its legacy of faith-driven excellence through this revitalized space. The Highmark Events Center now stands as a beacon of renewal and a testament to the enduring values that guide the university’s mission.
